We think of truckers a little bit like heroes. If you need help, it is always a trucker who will pull over, take the time to help you, and not leave until you are on your way. We have relatives who are truckers, and I could not help but notice they lost money when they had an empty haul on the way back home.

In addition, Shippers do not always get the attention they need, so we decided to help. So we started Bubbaships. We now connect up truckers and shippers at a super discount to both. It saves everyone money.

What is a USDOT Number?

A USDOT Number is a unique identifier for a company, recognized by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). It is a series of 1 to 8 digits used to track your company’s safety record, compliance, and incidents. This number is essential for businesses involved in transporting cargo, passengers, or hazardous materials.

When do I need a USDOT Number?

Your company will need a USDOT Number if it engages in any of the following activities:

Uses vehicles weighing over 10,001 pounds (4,536 kg) in total (GVWR, GCWR, GVW, or GCW).
Has employees operating commercial vehicles across state lines (interstate).
Transports passengers for hire (specifically 9-15 people).
Transports more than 15 people for any purpose.
Moves hazardous materials of any kind.

What is an MC Number?

An MC (Motor Carrier) Number is required if your business operates across state lines for compensation. This is an operating authority granted by the FMCSA. Companies involved in moving goods for hire, transporting passengers, or dealing with federally regulated goods crossing state lines need an MC number.

Do I need a USDOT Number for each vehicle?

No, your company only needs one USDOT Number. It should be displayed on all of your commercial vehicles. If you also have an MC Number, the same rule applies.

What do I need to get a USDOT Number?

To apply for a USDOT Number, you must provide the following:

Business information (e.g., name, location, etc.)
Personal information for FMCSA contact purposes
Details about the type of operation you plan to conduct
Specify whether your business will transport people or cargo
A valid business address

Additional Requirements for Transporters:

Transporters must meet the following criteria:

Must be a legal business entity (LLC, INC, Corporation, etc.).
Must have a Federal Tax ID number (EIN), not a Social Security Number.
Drivers must possess a valid driver’s license as required by the state or government entity.
No DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) offenses in the last 10 years.
No felony or violent offenses in the last 10 years.
Must have a clean driving record, with no history of drug use in the last 10 years.
Must be physically and mentally fit to operate as a carrier.
Must have a closed-in truck, van, or trailer to transport cargo—flatbeds or open pickup truck beds are not acceptable.
Must have a minimum of $100,000 in cargo insurance.

Where do I apply for a USDOT Number?

To apply for a USDOT Number, you must apply through the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) website. You cannot apply through Bubbaships Connections.
